My Zen Brush 2 Painting and Information on iPad Art – a Downloadable Pdf

*First written, 2015; updated: 2019. Much of this post is still relevant, however, there’s more information on my pages, “Printing iPad and Traditional Art”  and “Some App Information”.

I painted these flowers in the inky Zen Brush 2 app. This is the latest version; even more lovely than the first release, which also has beautiful media. Along with the black and greys, there is now  red and pinks, and it’s even more whooshy than the first one. Love it!

Since I began blogging here about 7 months ago – I’ve presented in my posts, the creative potential of drawing and painting using various art apps.

I thought a downloadable information sheet, may also be helpful. I enjoyed doing the “infographic” as I think they are called; look similiar to what I know as “Mind Maps”.  Recently when I shared about my iPad art at the local community house it spurred me on to write one. *My info graphic” and a link to it are at the bottom of this post

Some general background points

For nearly two years, I’ve explored drawing and painting on my iPad, using extraordinary art app media – not something I really planned. *Some art apps I use are also available on android tablets.

Never thought I’d draw with my finger on a glass screen, or use any of this type of modern technology!
All my studies and training are in the traditional, fine arts. I’ve rarely used a computer and have no skills in using digital art programs.

What began as an initial search for an art app to do simple line drawings, to illustrate my poems; became an exciting adventure, as I discovered apps which offered amazing media – much better than I ever imagined was possible! As in any art materials, there’s both poor and excellent quality. The art apps and their media I eventually found, and now use, are in the excellent category!

With the easy to use art apps, I list on the “infographic” below, you can work in much the same style: colours, line work, tonal range…. as you do on paper or canvas. This was important to me. I like to experiment in my artworks, but I also want to continue to use the skills I have spent years developing. So I was glad to find art apps which need little techno expertise, and I could just get on with drawing and painting!

Though many people use a stylus, I prefer to draw on the screen with my finger. I push around, oil pastels, splash around paint, or crosshatch with a pencil and so on… Quickly, I focus on my art, and the “feel” of the media, and the screen becomes my paper or canvas. Mostly I print up an image at home. Initially I’d send a pdf of an artwork to a local office store, for a laser print; or off to the Printers. Many, stay unseen – much like my paper sketchbooks.

My iPad (with an attached keyboard) is a self-contained, all purpose, art and writing studio. I use it to blog (I built this website on it) write, paint, draw, read, make ebooks, easily put together “infographics”, scan in my works on paper or canvas, work on them further in an art app, reprint them…and more. Also saves: time, money and space.

    1. Thank you, Janina. Joked with a friend the other day, that Apple should pay me for all the advertising…and also the people who create the apps..ha,ha. I’ve gone to the app store and on various apps, written rave reviews and excellent ratings… they certainly deserve it. I love what you are doing with your photos…had a look at your site at pixel.com, looks great! I have a site at RedBubble, with some of my iPad art. Enjoy your weekend. 🙂 ~ Janette.

    2. Honestly, I truly believe you SHOULD get in touch with Apple. They’re not going to know unless you tell them….gotta market yourself direct, no-one else will!!
Thanks re my new pixels.com site…certainly different from what you see here! An acquired taste…LOL. Had any luck (meaning sales) with RB?

    3. Hi Janina, contacting Apple – …hmm maybe oneday! Marketing, is a whole new ball game for me. Though now, I’m online with my art, there is more opportunity to share it and perhaps even sell some. I have only sold to myself, one other and a friend..from RedBubble…oh well, still glad people can view my art that way. I have a direct link to it on my sidebar, however, it may be worth sharing more about my RedBubble site in posts. I have noticed some bloggers show a pic of their art, and share a link to their shop site… probably worth doing occaisonally. I do need to get back over there and sort my RedBubble site out a bit, put it into collections and put more art on there….
Apparently you can put a Paypal button onto a WordPress.com site and sell your work that way.
Recently, I found a great Printers in N.S.W, codeice.com.au. They do quite reasonably priced giclee prints..uploaded them easily from my iPad…turned out really well. I gather you are in Melb (I’m in Gippsland, Vic) thought you may be interested to know about it for your lovely photos. I may exhibit some giclee prints locally (I have done so, with my framed laser prints)…eventually! I think I’ve just about written a post…actually, may share more about these things, in a post, when I get time.
Better dash, cooking tea… still have quite a few family members to cook for here at home. All the best, Janette. 🙂

  2. Hi Janet,
    How are you.
Just wanted to thank you for all the support you give my blog. Gratefully appreciated.
I was just reading some of your comments and I also think you should contact Apple to see if they can utilise your expertise with the IPad in art matters. Yes maybe an app.
For selling your work, have you looked at setting up a store on Etsy? It is very reasonable and a good platform.
    Regards,
    Susanne

    1. Hi Susanne, things are going well, thank you for asking; and for your lovely comment! I do joke sometimes that Apple or some App developers should pay me for promoting their products. 🙂
Don’t know anything about app development…but I am certainly learning a lot (by trial and error) about what I can do with all of the lovely apps I use. Lots of fun! Who knows, one day I may let them know what I’m doing.
It’s easy to give you support as I love your art! You also seem a friendly person. 🙂 Your new Etsy shop looks great! It’s funny you mention Etsy, because I was just looking into it further. As I mostly do iPad art these days; it would have to be prints and or those downloadable prints you do…which look fantastic. I went into the forums and tried to find out how I would work it all out by uploading via my iPad. I really don’t use computers; I do everything on my iPad. I managed to build my blog on it, so I may able to work something out for Etsy. Working via the Etsy apps will probably be the way I’ll have to go. Meanwhile, it’s getting the time to do all these things! May ask you more about it, one day, by messaging you on your facebook artist page. Wishing you well, for all your arty projects. Great to know a fellow Aussie blogger. 🙂 Cheerio for now, Janette.
