A beautiful bunch of Hakea leaves were given to me by a friend; she thought I’d enjoy drawing them. So true! They have a similiar elegance to the gum leaves I recently drew. For this very quick sketch I used an Artline pen. I love how the ink lines travel in unexpected ways when I add a brush of water to them. After I scanned it in to the iPad (using the Scanner Pro app) I added a little colour (freehand) in Procreate. *This can be seen in the video below. I’ve only hinted at the flowers, as they were getting past their bloom. At their peak, they have rather fascinating shapes and colours.

The ink in this pen is unfortunately not light fast. However, printing it with my Epson pigment ink printer, changes it into a print that it is light fast up to 50+ years. I’ve also printed the intial drawing onto a sheet of A4 Daler Rowney 300gsm watercolour paper. Now I can add washes of (good quality, fade resistant) watercolour, and have a finished work that stays around!
